Independence note: askotto is an independent consumer-information and consultancy publisher. We are not a mobile network, and we are not owned by, partnered with, or endorsed by Three, O2, Sky Mobile, EE, Vodafone or any provider named in these reports. Everything here is general guidance, marked and written by our own reviewers; confirm current details with the network before acting. Our phone and WhatsApp lines reach askotto consultants only — never a network's own customer service.
Section 01
The six-step fix
Work down, stop when cured
- Wi-Fi Calling ON — calls ride your broadband and walls stop mattering.
- 4G Calling (VoLTE) ON — essential since the 3G shutdowns of 2024–25.
- Airplane mode for ten seconds — forces a fresh handshake with the nearest healthy mast.
- Install pending phone and carrier updates.
- Move a metre — a window changes physics.
- Check the network status page with your postcode before blaming the handset.
Section 02
When it isn't you
Hours-long dead patchMast maintenance or a fault — status page confirms; nothing on the phone fixes it.
Full bars, frozen dataCongestion — stations, stadiums, the 5–7pm urban squeeze (documented on O2 and inherited by Sky).
One cursed roomBuilding materials — Wi-Fi Calling is the answer, not a complaint.
Elderly handset, no calls3G is gone on all four networks — 4G Calling on, or the handset retires.
Section 03
If it persists
Log dates, places and failures for a fortnight, then complain in writing. Eight weeks unanswered — or a deadlock letter sooner — opens the free, binding ombudsman route on the complaints page.
