Scam defence — the current catalogue

Every scam below is running right now. Each one dies against a single habit — usually the five-second app check or a flat refusal to read out codes.

Independence note: askotto is an independent consumer-information and consultancy publisher. We are not a mobile network, and we are not owned by, partnered with, or endorsed by Three, O2, Sky Mobile, EE, Vodafone or any provider named in these reports. Everything here is general guidance, marked and written by our own reviewers; confirm current details with the network before acting. Our phone and WhatsApp lines reach askotto consultants only — never a network's own customer service.
Section 01

The catalogue

The upgrade call'Exclusive deal, today only.' Defence: open the app — genuine offers show inside the account. Not there = fraud.
Merger migration'Your plan must move because of VodafoneThree.' No such process exists; real changes arrive in writing.
Parcel / redelivery textA small 'fee' link harvesting card details. Track parcels only in the courier's own app.
Satellite activation feeRides the real O2/Starlink trials — which are network-run and free.
Paid PAC / activation / eSIM-transfer feesThese services are free by regulation. Any charge is the tell.
SIM-swapYour phone goes dead for no reason: someone may have ported your number. Ring the network's fraud line from any other phone immediately.
Section 02

The three standing defences

Habits, not vigilance
  • The five-second check: offers live in the app; callers describing invisible deals are frauds.
  • Codes to nobody: no genuine agent ever needs a one-time code read aloud.
  • Report as reflex: forward scam texts to 7726 free; report losses to Action Fraud.
Section 03

If money already moved

Call your bank's fraud line first (moving fast matters), then the network's fraud team, then Action Fraud for the crime reference insurers and banks ask for. Keep everything — texts, numbers, times.
