Section 01
The five patterns
Local, sudden, hours-longMast maintenance or fault. Status checker + postcode; wait it out.
Bars full, data dead, eveningsCongestion — documented in busy urban centres (O2's measured squeeze; Sky inherits it). More masts is the slow cure; Wi-Fi at home is the fast one.
Calls failing on older phonesThe 3G shutdowns (Three & EE 2024, O2 2025). 4G Calling on, or retire the handset.
One room, foreverConstruction materials. Wi-Fi Calling.
Brief oddities, merger eraVodafoneThree mast stitching occasionally wobbles a cell — planned works appear on status pages.
Section 02
Rare national outages
Once in a while a network suffers a genuine national fault. The tells: social feeds light up, the status page confirms, and nothing on your phone helps. Keep Wi-Fi Calling on so home and office stay reachable, and wait — these usually resolve within hours.
Section 03
Money back
The compensation route
- Log the outage: dates, times, postcode, what failed.
- Report it to the network in writing once restored.
- Sustained or repeated loss of service can earn goodwill credit or, for fixed-line-style failures, defined compensation.
- Refused after a fair log? Eight weeks or deadlock → the free ombudsman.
