O2 — askotto scorecard
| Criterion | Mark | Examiner's note |
|---|
| Coverage & signal | B | Solid national reach; documented evening slowdowns in busy city centres. |
| Value for money | B | Mid-table pricing, lifted by perks and split contracts. |
| Data rules | B | Fair at home; tethering clauses on some tiers. |
| Roaming | A | The last big-four network with inclusive EU roaming on standard plans. |
| App & support | B+ | MyO2 for admin, Priority for perks — one login guards both. |
| Flexibility & exit | A- | Split contracts mean device payments genuinely stop. |
Criterion 01
Identity, ownership & history
B+
O2 began life as BT's Cellnet and re-emerged under the bubbles in 2002. Since 2021 it has been half of Virgin Media O2 — and it plays landlord to more of the market than any rival: Tesco Mobile, giffgaff and Sky Mobile all transmit on O2 masts.
Corporate familyVirgin Media O2 (since 2021).
Tenant brandsTesco Mobile, giffgaff, Sky Mobile — identical signal, different shopfronts.
The stanceKept inclusive EU roaming on standard plans when every big rival retreated to daily fees.
3G statusRetired during 2025 — the last big switch-off. 4G Calling on; elderly handsets out.
Satellite trials2025–26 Starlink-partnered satellite messaging pilots aimed at rural not-spots — run by the network, free of charge.
Red-pen note: A 'satellite activation fee' does not exist. Anyone charging one is running a scam on the back of a real trial.
Criterion 02
SIM plans & the Priority perk machine
BOne-month rollingThe commitment-free audition tier.
12–24 month fixedCheaper for the promise; exit figures disclosed in the PAC reply.
Pay as you goCheckless and light — spares, kids, trials.
UnlimitedAvailable across tiers; the usual bends (tethering, congestion, foreign ceilings) marked in Criterion 6.
Extra household SIMsMulti-line discounts under a single account.
PriorityA separate perks app: presales, freebies, weekly offers. Enjoyable — but never a reason to accept one bar in your kitchen.
Marking scheme- Spend cap on at activation — free, instant, in MyO2.
- Size data from three measured months, not instinct.
- Score the plan on signal and total cost first; count perks only as a tiebreak.
Criterion 03
Phone contracts — the split that earns marks
A-
O2's signature construction is the split contract, and it is genuinely consumer-friendly:
Device planThe handset on its own credit agreement — payments stop the moment it is repaid. No paying forever for a finished phone.
Airtime planMinutes, texts and data billed separately — downgradeable once the device clears.
Early settlementClear the device balance whenever you like and keep only the airtime.
Credit checksAttach to the device agreement; airtime-only stays light.
Trade-in & upgradesSame law as everywhere — second quote on the trade-in, and total any upgrade against outright-plus-SIM before nodding.
Red-pen note: Because the two halves are visible, O2's arithmetic is unusually easy to audit. Use that: the transparency is only worth marks if you actually read both lines.
Criterion 04
eSIM & device features
B+IssueMyO2, the website or shops; broad recent-flagship support; live in minutes.
Number movesFree PAC text to 65075 — plastic and digital alike.
Travel pairingBeyond Europe, an O2 line plus a local data eSIM frequently beats daily passes even with the EU perk.
ReissuesOfficial channels only; paid 'transfer help' is fraud.
Wi-Fi & 4G CallingMature support on mainstream handsets — both on, given the 3G retirement.
The loginMyO2 guards the number your bank texts. Strongest password you own; codes read to no caller, ever.
Criterion 05
Broadband & the Virgin bundle
B
In this family, home broadband means Virgin Media — cable and expanding full fibre. Wires, not masts: whether your street is cabled and whether your bedroom has O2 bars are two unrelated questions.
- The bundle lever: homes pairing Virgin broadband with O2 mobile keep being offered bonus data or discounts — price the pair, not the parts.
- Volt-style mechanics have historically doubled mobile data or boosted broadband speed; the current shape lives on official pages.
- No cable on your street? O2 mobile works regardless — the broadband arm is simply not in play.
Criterion 06
Data, unlimited & roaming — the EU holdout
A
The roaming stance that sets O2 apart
- Standard O2 plans include EU roaming — alone among the big four — under a fair-use ceiling (historically around the 25GB mark; O2's pages carry today's exact figure), with per-GB rates beyond it.
- Outside Europe, daily travel passes by destination are switched on in MyO2.
- Unlimited plays fair on the handset at home; hotspot-heavy tiers carry tethering clauses worth reading; nothing stays unlimited abroad.
Pre-flight, five minutes- Spend cap confirmed on.
- Fair-use ceiling for your destination noted.
- Longer trip? Price a local data eSIM against the passes.
- Data off at sea — maritime rates answer to no cap.
Criterion 07
Fees, two apps & getting help
B+Airtime monthlyJudge post-discount, as everywhere.
Device monthlyIts own agreement — ends at repayment, settleable early. The tidy half of the split.
Mid-contract risesPounds-and-pence disclosure before signature, mandatory since January 2025.
Leaving earlyAirtime term charge plus any device balance — both itemised in the PAC reply.
Out-of-contract driftThe airtime keeps billing until told otherwise; diarise the device end date.
Two apps, one precious login
MyO2 is the office — allowances, bills, caps, roaming, eSIM, device balance. Priority is the party — offers and presales. The shared login is exactly what "free Priority reward" phishing hunts. The five-second defence: genuine offers appear inside the account; anything a caller describes that the app cannot see is already exposed. Complaints ride the standard ladder — written complaint, eight weeks or deadlock, then the free binding ombudsman.
Criterion 08
Why the signal glitches — fault diagnosis
B-Evenings crawl in the cityThe documented one: full bars, treacle data, roughly 5–7pm in congested centres. Trial your own evenings before signing.
Sudden local outageMast maintenance — status page plus postcode before any settings safari.
Elderly handset, failed callsThe 2025 3G retirement — 4G Calling on.
The cursed roomWalls beat radio; Wi-Fi Calling is the cure.
Tenant confusionTesco, giffgaff and Sky customers ring their own brand, never O2 — the masts are shared, the accounts are not.
Criterion 09
Final verdict, joining & leaving
BCredit awarded- Inclusive EU roaming on standard plans — unique among the four
- Split contracts: device payments that truly stop
- Priority perks and venue presales
- Pennies-cheap auditions via giffgaff and Tesco on identical masts
- Satellite trials hunting the last dead zones
Marks lost- Average speeds often trail the fastest rivals
- The evening city slowdown is measured, not rumoured
- Perks tempt people past bad postcodes
- Satellite is a pilot, not a promise
Joining & leaving — the safe order of operations- Postcode check on O2's checker and Ofcom's, weighting indoor readings.
- Audition with a short giffgaff or Tesco Mobile plan — O2's exact masts for less.
- Exit anytime with the free PAC text to 65075; the reply itemises any airtime charge and device balance.
- Stuck complaint? Eight weeks or a deadlock letter opens the free, binding ombudsman.
