Criterion 01
A-Identity, ownership & history
EE was born in 2010 from the Orange–T-Mobile merger and switched on the UK's first 4G in 2012 — a head start it has sold ever since. Owned by BT Group, it is progressively becoming the front door for BT's whole consumer stack: mobile, broadband and TV under one roof and one login.
Born2010 (Orange + T-Mobile); first UK 4G, 2012.
OwnerBT Group — consumer brands folding under the EE roof.
PositionThe premium seller: broadest coverage, priced accordingly.
Tenant1pMobile rides EE's masts as the pay-per-use minnow — and doubles as the cheapest audition ticket.
3G statusRetired during 2024; 4G Calling on.
Criterion 02
BSIM plans & extras
The tier ladderSmall buckets to unlimited, priced above the value crowd.
Bundled extrasStreaming and security riders on bigger tiers — count them only if you'd have bought them anyway.
Family SIMsExtra SIMs under one account earn discounts and shared perks — real savings, gravity attached.
Pay as you goLight, checkless — and a fine audition tool.
The back door1pMobile: identical masts, pocket-change rates, audition and budget option in one.
Add-onsBoosts and passes in-app for heavy months.
Marking scheme
- Spend cap on, day one.
- Size the tier from three measured months in the app.
- Judge post-discount pricing; premium tiers make the after-term drift dearest of all.
Criterion 03
C+Phone contracts & upgrade schemes
- The bundle: handset plus airtime over 24–36 months — diary the end date; the after-term leak lives here as everywhere, and EE's premium airtime makes it the most expensive version of the leak.
- Yearly upgrade schemes: a rolling fee for permanent newness — a subscription, not a saving. Total the true cost across years before joining.
- Trade-in: second quote from the maker or a recycler, every time.
- Credit checks on monthly handset agreements; SIM-only stays light.
Red-pen note: The outright-plus-cheap-SIM benchmark bites hardest at EE, because the airtime carries a premium. Run the total before every signature.
Criterion 04
AeSIM & device features
IssueOne of the smoothest in-app eSIM flows in the UK; broad flagship support; live in minutes.
Number movesFree PAC text to 65075.
Travel pairingEE line plus local data eSIM often beats daily fees on longer trips.
Wi-Fi & 4G CallingLong-standing, mature support — both on.
One-login warningAs BT pulls services behind one account, that login guards mobile, broadband and more. Strongest password owned; every extra protection on; codes to nobody.
Criterion 05
B+Broadband & bundles
EE BroadbandOpenreach lines — the street's wiring decides, not masts — with BT's consumer broadband migrating under the EE brand.
The bundle engineMobile plus broadband on one account keeps unlocking discounts and family-SIM data boosts — often decisive for multi-SIM homes.
4G/5G router optionCovers badly wired streets; ruled by the local mast.
Gravity warningOne account for everything makes exits feel stickier than they legally are. The PAC text does not care.
Criterion 06
B-Data, unlimited & roaming
- The default: most newer EE plans charge a daily fee in Europe.
- The exception: certain higher tiers carry a Roam Abroad-style pass restoring inclusive roaming, occasionally beyond Europe — plan generation and tier decide; the app confirms.
- Ceilings: fair-use limits abroad on everything.
- At home: unlimited is honest on the handset; hotspot-heavy users read the tethering clause.
- 5G+ (standalone): the national lead — 5G on its own modern core, noticeably snappier where live, still the smallest layer, needs recent handsets.
Criterion 07
A-Fees, the app & getting help
Premium monthlyJudge post-discount; the premium is the price of the coverage record.
Mid-contract risesPounds-and-pence disclosure since January 2025 — historically EE's sorest subject; read that line twice.
Leaving earlyInside fixed terms only; itemised in the PAC reply.
Out-of-contract driftPremium tiers make it the dearest drift in mobile — diarise the end date.
The appAmong the fullest going: family SIMs, device unlocking, broadband management, caps, eSIM, allowances, bills. Genuine offers appear inside the account — the five-second check beats every 'upgrades team' call.
ComplaintsStandard ladder to the free binding ombudsman; BT→EE account moves occasionally muddy bundled billing — complain in writing, keep references.
Criterion 08
A-Why the signal glitches
Maintenance & crowdsThe universal physics — status checker before settings.
2024 3G retirementElderly handsets stumble on calls — 4G Calling on.
Champions have dead rooms tooThick walls — Wi-Fi Calling.
BT→EE migrationBilling confusion in bundled homes — written complaints with references.
Rural nuanceBroadest coverage ≠ every postcode. Your address, never the headline.
Criterion 09
